Derel Wust
Managing Director of 4Tel

Derel owns 4Tel Pty Ltd which specialises in the innovative use of technology in the rail industry.  He has worked extensively across Australia and overseas in the defence, telecommunications and railway industries.  Derel has senior executive level experience in both public and private entities. He has been an active member in the ARA Spectrum Committee working on interstate rail spectrum policy issues. 

Derel’s educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours and a Graduate Diploma in Management Studies. Derel is also a Member of Institution of Engineers Australia registered as a Chartered Professional Engineer, and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Director’s course.

Mark Wood
General Manager of Communications & Electronics

Before joining 4Tel in 2004, Mark was employed as an Air Force communication electronics systems technician for 13 years.  Mark has now risen to the role of General Manager Communications & Electronics, and now manages the radio, software and hardware solutions sections of the company.

Mark has an Advanced Diploma of Electrical Engineering with Distinction and received an Engineering Medal, 2000, and an Advanced Diploma of Communications Management.

While he has managed engineering, software and technical officer staff for the business’ activities in Newcastle specifically, his duties have also taken him to Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia. A very large recent task was the design and construction of a new train control centre for John Holland Rail for the NSW Country Rail Network.

Mark has been a long term adviser to the Australian Rail Track Corporation’s New Train Communications System (NTCS) and specifically the In-cab Communications Equipment (ICE). The ICE is a Telstra NextG-based train radio solution for the interstate freight locomotive fleet.

Tony Crosby
General Manager of Services 

Tony commenced working in the rail industry in 2000.  During his time with RailCorp he managed capital projects to replace older signal boxes with computer-based signal control systems.  During his time with ARTC 2004-2010 Tony was initially the NSW Communications Manager responsible for separation of the country train radio and communications systems from the metropolitan (RailCorp) systems and maintenance of the assets.    He was also responsible for writing the functional specification for the ARTC National Train Communications System (NTCS) and was subsequently assigned as the NTCS Project Manager to implement the NTCS and its ‘ICE’ train radio.

Graham Hjort
General Manager of Control Systems

Graham manages the work of the control system staff in the company.  He has a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours and a Grad Dip Railway Signalling.  While specialising in rail control systems, most of the technology used has general purposes usage in any control system, such as SCADA systems design and configuration, communications telemetry, functional safety assessments, system reliability and training.  Prior to his current role at 4Tel, Graham was the CTC Engineer at ARTC for six years where he was responsible for all train control and telemetry systems for the ARTC network in NSW, including the Junee and Broadmeadow train control centres.

Graham’s most recent large tasks were configuring the train control systems in the new John Holland Rail Network Management Centre in Newcastle.  The systems include the deployment of SIL-2 train order working across 2,246 km of track, track circuited rail vehicle detection on 160 km of track, managing accreditation, and management of various remote control signalling and telemetry projects. Graham has an ongoing brief to leverage new technology for the provision of improved control systems and service delivery.

Andrie Swart
General Manager of African Operations

With over 15 years experience in the enterprise telecoms space, Andrie comes from a systems engineering background. Andrie has worked globally with some of the largest managed outsource service providers focusing on solutions architecture, service delivery and managed services in the cloud and datacenter, security and networking arena and has led large transition transformation and integration engagements. Andrie made a transition to the railway industry as part of delivering infrastructure and software solutions for rail operations to customers in Africa, and ultimately as ICT General Manager for Rift Valley Railways in Kenya where he was responsible for availability of systems, communications of rail operations systems and spearheading skills transfer initiatives to trainees and interns. Andrie has joined the 4tel team to duplicate our success into the African market, and spearhead business development and project delivery growing and retaining our footprint in emerging markets.

Rodney Lewis
Senior Software Engineer 

Rodney guides the development and maintenance work of the 4Tel software team. He is a highly proficient senior analyst/programmer with over 25 years’ experience in the development of software, from simple solutions to large complex systems. He has had comprehensive experience in the full life cycle of software support, including application development, requirements gathering, documentation, system and database design, coding, testing and implementation.

Rod has considerable experience with various UNIX operating systems, X11 and Motif, Oracle and extensive experience with the C programming language. He is also well versed in application support, developing skills in configuration management, problem resolution and customer relations.

Rod’s most recent experience is in designing, developing and maintaining 4Tel’s 4Site and 4Trak products. These solutions have been implemented in Java and PHP and also utilise a variety of XML based technologies.
